In response to MPs' warnings about the £20bn annual cost of Britain's air pollution emergency, Pod Point CEO Erik Fairbairn explains why electric vehicles (EVs) are the natural solution to this crisis.
Market forces, rather than government intervention, will drive the transition from petrol and diesel vehicles to EVs. The main barriers to EV adoption are rapidly disappearing:
- Battery costs have plunged from $1,000/kWh in 2010 to $209/kWh in 2017
- Battery lifespan has significantly increased
- Total cost of ownership for EVs has already achieved price parity with conventional vehicles
- By early 2020s, EVs will be cheaper to own and maintain than petrol or diesel alternatives
The range anxiety issue is being addressed with several 200+ mile range vehicles launching, including:
- Tesla Model 3
- Jaguar I-Pace
- Audi e-tron
These improvements will accelerate industry growth, making EVs the obvious choice by 2025. The transition to electric vehicles will not only benefit the environment but also significantly improve public health by reducing air pollution.
