The new Mercedes GLB is receiving a significant update for 2026, featuring both petrol and electric powertrains while maintaining its distinctive boxy seven-seater design.

Currently undergoing development testing, the new GLB will share many components with the upcoming CLA and is expected to debut by late 2025. Despite heavy camouflage, the prototype reveals the GLB will retain its rugged, utilitarian appearance with some modern refinements.

The updated design features rectangular headlights with Mercedes' signature three-pointed star daytime running lights, a slightly more rounded front bumper, and redesigned upright taillights. The vehicle maintains its distinctive boxy profile that sets it apart from other SUVs in its segment.

Powertrain options will include:

• A 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 48-volt mild hybrid system
• An all-electric version utilizing Mercedes' new high-density battery technology

The mild hybrid system integrates a small battery and motor in the gearbox to improve efficiency, though it won't offer pure electric driving in traffic like full hybrids. The electric variant is expected to achieve over 400 miles of range, slightly less than the CLA's 460-mile capability due to the GLB's larger size and less aerodynamic shape.

Sales are expected to begin in 2026, following the CLA's mid-2025 launch. The new GLB aims to build upon its predecessor's success by offering improved efficiency, technology, and versatility while maintaining its unique position as a compact seven-seat SUV.
