BMW Launches Revolutionary Compact DC Fast Chargers and Free Charging Program at Plug-In 2014
BMW introduces compact, affordable DC Fast Chargers and free charging program for i3 owners, marking a significant advancement in EV charging infrastructure. The company unveiled these innovations at Plug-In 2014 in San Jose, California.
The new BMW i DC Fast Charger, developed with Bosch Automotive Service Solutions, offers several groundbreaking features:
- Charges BMW i3 batteries up to 80% in 30 minutes
- 50% smaller than traditional DC chargers (31"H x 19"W x 12"D)
- Wall-mountable design weighing only 100 pounds
- Competitively priced at $6,548 for authorized BMW partners
- Compatible with SAE Combo 1 connector standard
- Operates in extreme temperatures (-40°F to 185°F)
- ChargePoint network-enabled for easy access
The 24 kW charger delivers current directly to the vehicle's battery for efficient, rapid charging. It features a durable aluminum IP54 enclosure and meets NEMA 3 requirements for weather resistance.
BMW also launched the ChargeNow DC Fast program in partnership with NRG eVgo, offering:
- Free unlimited 30-minute DC fast charging through 2015
- Available at participating NRG eVgo Freedom Stations in California
- Minimum 100 BMW i3-compatible DC Fast Chargers across California
- Simple enrollment process at chargenow.com/us
- Requires initial charge by December 31, 2014, using ChargeNow card
- Vehicle must be equipped with DC Fast Charging option (SAE)
This initiative represents a significant step toward creating an accessible, interoperable public charging network, supported by major automakers including BMW, GM, Ford, Chrysler, Daimler, Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche who have committed to the SAE Combo 1 standard.
The BMW i DC Fast Chargers will be available at BMW i Centers across the U.S. starting August 2014.
