Ford's strategy includes multiple tiers of racing, from entry-level to professional competition:

  • Mustang Cup (Entry Level): USAC-sanctioned series for newcomers
  • Mustang Challenge: IMSA-sanctioned series featuring Dark Horse R cars
  • GT4: Competing in Michelin Pilot Challenge
  • GT3: Racing in IMSA GTD Pro and GTD classes

The Dark Horse R program has seen remarkable success, with 55 cars built and strong demand leading to the creation of a second series. The race car costs $159,000 (2025 model) and includes access to Ford Performance Tech Center's driver simulator.

Key achievements and developments:

  • GTD Pro class victory at 2024 Daytona
  • Three drivers graduating from Challenge to GT4 in just one year
  • New Dark Horse R homologation with mandatory updates for 2025
  • International expansion beginning with Le Mans support races (30-35 cars expected)

Ford's unique advantage is using the same chassis platform throughout its motorsport pyramid, from entry-level to GT3. This consistency helps drivers progress through the ranks while maintaining familiarity with the vehicle dynamics.

Future plans include:

  • Global expansion of Mustang Challenge beyond the U.S.
  • Development of racing infrastructure in Australia and Europe
  • Continued growth of customer racing programs
  • Enhanced support network in international markets

Mark Rushbrook, Ford Performance's global director, emphasizes the long-term vision: "We're building GT3s, GT4s, and Dark Horse Rs as fast as we can – we can't build them fast enough for teams and drivers. We are looking long-term, with the goal of winning with Mustang globally."

The program represents Ford's comprehensive approach to motorsport, creating a clear pathway from grassroots racing to professional competition while strengthening the Mustang's global racing presence.
