Formula E Introduces Strategic Pit Boost System with Mid-Race Energy Recharge
Formula E's upcoming Jeddah E-Prix will introduce Pit Boost, adding a new strategic element to races that allows drivers to gain 10% more energy through mandatory 30-second pit stops.

Alberto Longo, Formula E's co-founder, believes this addition will create excitement by allowing teams to use the extra energy at different moments throughout the 45-minute races. Previously, drivers started with roughly half the required race energy and had to carefully manage it.
Key aspects of Pit Boost:
- 30-second mandatory pit stop
- 10% additional energy gain
- Flexible deployment strategy
- Potential disadvantage for second drivers within teams
- Integration with existing Attack Mode strategy
Teams face several challenges with Pit Boost implementation:
- Precise timing of energy deployment
- Coordination with Attack Mode usage
- Procedural efficiency during pit stops
- Strategic planning for maximum advantage
The feature will initially be tested at six doubleheader events in Jeddah, Monaco, Tokyo, Shanghai, Berlin, and London. Longo indicates potential for expansion, including:
- Increased implementation across more races
- Higher energy boost percentages (up to 25%)
- Shorter charging times
- Integration with future GEN4 technology
Attack Mode will remain a separate strategic element, with plans to enhance its impact in future seasons. The combination of Pit Boost and Attack Mode aims to create more dynamic and unpredictable race strategies while maintaining Formula E's focus on energy efficiency and technological advancement.
Formula E officials believe this innovation adds road-relevant technology while creating more strategic opportunities for teams and enhanced entertainment for spectators.
