Helio Castroneves has secured the 41st position in the Daytona 500 through the Open Exemption Provisional after being involved in a crash during Thursday night's qualifying duel race at Daytona.

The incident occurred on lap 14 when Chandler Smith made contact with Justin Haley in Turn 1. Castroneves, running in the high lane two rows behind, had no escape route and was collected in the ensuing crash. His No. 91 car was forced to exit the race, finishing 22nd out of 23 drivers.
While attempting to continue after the initial crash, Castroneves suffered additional damage when he lost control in Turn 3 under caution due to a broken right rear toe link.
Trackhouse Racing had previously submitted Castroneves for the Open Exemption Provisional during winter, ensuring his spot in the Daytona 500 after failing to qualify on speed Wednesday night or through his qualifying duel race. NASCAR will expand the starting field to 41 cars to accommodate his entry.
Despite the setback, Castroneves remains optimistic about his Cup Series debut on Sunday: "I was comfortable in the high lane; very, very comfortable. I have to try a little bit in the low lane to see how it is. But as of right now, I was enjoying it very much."
The incident serves as a learning experience for the veteran racer as he prepares for his first NASCAR Cup Series race at the prestigious Daytona 500.
