Four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves will make his NASCAR debut in the 2024 Daytona 500 with Trackhouse Racing's Project 91 entry. The 49-year-old racing legend will attempt to qualify for the February 16 event in a Wendy's-sponsored car with Darian Grubb as crew chief.

Castroneves will need to earn his spot in the 40-car field through either single-car qualifying or The Duel qualifying race. He'll join teammates Ross Chastain, Shane van Gisbergen, and Daniel Suarez at Trackhouse Racing.

"Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would enter a NASCAR race and certainly not the Daytona 500 with a team like Trackhouse Racing," said Castroneves. "This is an opportunity that nobody in their right mind could ever turn down."

The Brazilian veteran brings impressive credentials to NASCAR:

  • 4 Indianapolis 500 victories
  • 30 career IndyCar wins
  • 3 Rolex 24 At Daytona victories
  • Experience in IROC Series (2002-2005)
  • Competition in Supercars and Brazilian stock car racing

Trackhouse's Project 91 program, designed to bring international racing talent to NASCAR, has already achieved success with Kimi Raikkonen's debut at Watkins Glen in 2022 and Shane van Gisbergen's victory at Chicago in 2023.

If successful at Daytona, Castroneves would join Mario Andretti and A.J. Foyt as the only drivers to win both the Indianapolis 500 and Daytona 500.
