Katherine Legge approaches her NASCAR Cup Series debut at Phoenix Raceway with measured expectations and a clear strategy focused on basics and steady progression.

The veteran racer aims to complete all 312 laps at the one-mile oval - her largest NASCAR track experience to date, following previous runs at Richmond's 0.750-mile circuit in the Xfinity Series.

Her primary objectives are straightforward:

  • Complete the full race distance
  • Minimize mistakes
  • Stay out of trouble
  • Show respect to competitors
  • Prove she belongs in the series

"I don't have any expectation that we're going to go out and be competitive. If I finish anything but last, it would be a win for us," Legge acknowledges, citing her limited experience and equipment constraints.

The opportunity with Live Fast Motorsports, a part-time single-car team owned by B.J. and Jessica McLeod, came together in just 10 days. While Legge would have preferred debuting at Circuit of The Americas' road course, NASCAR approved her for Phoenix given its shorter oval configuration.

Her preparation has been comprehensive, including:

  • Simulator work with Chevrolet
  • Pit stop practice at Hendrick Motorsports
  • Support from Richard Childress Racing and Kaulig Racing

"I feel super well supported and as prepared as I possibly can be having never driven on an oval like this in a Next Gen car," says Legge, who had hoped to maintain a low profile for her debut. However, with the race coinciding with International Women's Day celebrations, she acknowledges that flying under the radar won't be possible.
