Kyle Chaney Makes History with Can-Am UTV Victory at King of the Hammers
In a historic victory at the 2025 King of the Hammers "Race of Kings," Kyle Chaney piloted a Can-Am based UTV to outperform vehicles with quadruple the horsepower and cost. This marked the first-ever UTV-based vehicle victory in the event's history.

Yellow racing truck on rocky terrain
The race unfolded in three distinct phases. Former winner Loren Healy, in a factory Ford Bronco, led early before experiencing drivetrain issues. Defending champion JP Gomez took control after the second lap, with Jason Scherer and Casey Currie in close pursuit.
The deciding factor came during the secret third "Mystery Lap," featuring previously unexplored rock trails. The battle intensified between Josh Blyler and Gomez until mechanical issues struck both racers. Chaney seized the opportunity, navigating the treacherous terrain cleanly while competitor Cody Miller's chassis suffered a catastrophic break.
Chaney secured the victory with Gomez finishing second, 30 minutes behind. Brian Caprera, Robby Gordon (sharing driving duties with son Max), and Cody Addington completed the top five. Only 27 out of 97 starters completed the challenging course.
Other notable achievements from the week included:
- Brad Lovell's surprise victory in Friday's Yokohama Tire Every Man Challenge race, piloting a Stock class Ford Bronco
- Brock Heger's dominant performance in Thursday's Can-Am UTV Championship, finishing as the only driver under four hours
- Class victories for Casey Currie (Pro Stock Turbo UTV), Jeremy McGrath (Pro Stock NA UTV), Cody Miller (Pro Mod UTV), Jonathan Nelson (Sportsman Stock UTV), and Cameron Sorensen (Futures Youth 1000 UTV)
The 2025 event showcased the evolution of off-road racing, with UTVs proving capable of competing against and defeating traditionally more powerful vehicle classes.
