McLaren boss Stella optimistic on pace but sees six-team battle ahead
McLaren's race pace during testing shows promise, but team principal Andrea Stella acknowledges stronger competition from multiple teams heading into the new season.

While Williams' Carlos Sainz topped the timesheet on day two in Bahrain, McLaren demonstrated superior race simulation performance compared to Ferrari and Mercedes. However, Stella remains focused on validating their own data rather than comparing with competitors.
The team has implemented innovative changes to their car layout, with early testing confirming expected behaviors in both aerodynamic and mechanical aspects. Stella notes that while long-run pace appears encouraging, several teams have shown competitive lap times at low fuel loads.
The competitive landscape appears to be expanding, with Stella suggesting that the traditional "top three" teams could become "top five or six" this season. Alpine and Williams have shown particular promise among the previous midfield contenders.
Regarding tire testing, McLaren evaluated all three compounds during their long runs. Stella cautions against drawing firm conclusions from the current testing conditions, noting the unique circumstances of cold temperatures and Bahrain's track characteristics. The actual tire performance and car-tire interaction will likely differ significantly during the racing season.
"The indications here in Bahrain seem to say that the car at the moment interacts well with the tires, but in a very specific and special regime like we have in these days here," Stella concludes, emphasizing the need for careful interpretation of testing data.
