Thailand F1 Grand Prix Plans for Bangkok Gain Momentum Ahead of F1 Boss Visit
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali is set to visit Bangkok next week to evaluate potential F1 race plans in Thailand's capital city, as the nation emerges as a leading candidate for a future Grand Prix.

A delegation from the organizing committee is currently attending the Australian Grand Prix to study Albert Park's operations. The proposed Bangkok circuit would combine city streets with park sections in the Chatuchak area, following a similar model to Albert Park. The team previously conducted a similar study at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix.
Thailand's bid has gained significant traction amid F1's new race rotation strategy. This approach has already affected the Belgian Grand Prix, which will move to alternate years from 2027, with similar arrangements being considered for Barcelona and Imola.
Other potential venues have faced setbacks:
- Rwanda's prospects have diminished due to regional conflicts and infrastructure concerns
- South Africa's Kyalami circuit bid hasn't materialized
- Former F1 venues in Turkey (Istanbul Park) and Malaysia (Sepang) have expressed interest but are considered less viable
Industry insiders rate the chances of a Bangkok Grand Prix agreement at 50/50. McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown supports calendar expansion through rotation, suggesting a model of 20 fixed races plus 8 rotating events to reach 28 markets while maintaining the current 24-race season limit.
"The calendar is very difficult on everybody," Brown noted, advocating for a balanced approach to growing F1's global presence while considering team logistics and personnel demands.
