Despite leading qualifying in a thrilling session at Jeddah, Verstappen expressed concerns about his long-run pace compared to McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. "Up until now not very confident, to be honest. My long runs weren't particularly great compared to Oscar or Lando. I'm going to give it everything I have, for sure," Verstappen stated.

The defending champion's success in qualifying came after making crucial car adjustments that improved his confidence. The Red Bull team's strategic decision to complete two runs following Norris' red flag incident in Q3 proved decisive, helping Verstappen edge out Piastri by just 0.01 seconds.

"We made some minor changes to the car but they were clearly big enough to feel," Verstappen explained. "That's a bit the story of our car — it can be really hit and miss. When we get it right it's competitive, but when we don't get it right it's a lot more difficult."

The two-lap strategy in Q3 proved particularly effective, with Verstappen completing his first lap on used tires before switching to new ones. Despite carrying extra fuel weight, this approach helped him maintain rhythm and build up to the limit, ultimately securing pole position in challenging conditions.

With higher temperatures and more overtaking opportunities expected in Saudi Arabia compared to Suzuka, Verstappen remains realistic about his chances but determined to fight for victory from pole position.
