The French driver executed what he called "a very special lap" in Q3, placing him behind only George Russell and Carlos Sainz. This achievement is particularly noteworthy given Alpine's struggles earlier in the season, when they started from the back row in Bahrain.
Gasly's success came from Alpine's strategic decision to run an aggressive low-downforce package, maximizing straight-line speed on the Las Vegas Strip Circuit. Despite the challenging cold conditions, he maintained strong performance throughout all practice sessions before delivering his standout qualifying lap.
"We never thought we'd be in a position to get in that top three," Gasly admitted, highlighting the unexpected nature of their success. The achievement is even more impressive considering he secured the position with only one set of new tires in Q3.
Looking ahead to the race, Gasly remains focused on Alpine's primary goal of defending their sixth place in the constructors' championship against Haas, rather than battling with the Red Bulls, McLarens, and Ferraris starting behind him. He acknowledged the challenge of tire graining on the circuit and emphasized the importance of proper race preparation.
This qualifying result represents Gasly's first top-three start and continues Alpine's recent upward trajectory in performance, marking a significant turnaround in their 2024 campaign.
