BMW is actively considering entering a third M Hybrid V8 at the Le Mans 24 Hours, potentially through its IMSA partner Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing (RLL). This follows similar moves by other manufacturers like Cadillac, Porsche, and Ferrari.

Recent developments supporting this possibility include:

  • WRT's improved performance in WEC during late 2024
  • RLL's strong showing at the 2025 Daytona 24 Hours
  • Implementation of a new 'Joker' update focusing on brake performance

BMW M Motorsport chief Andreas Roos emphasizes that while additional entries are desirable, financial viability is crucial for approval: "The more cars we have the better it is, but we have to be realistic. It's not just having the car on the grid, the whole package has to come together."

Competition for grid spots is intense, with:

  • 62 total available spaces
  • 36 spots taken by full-season WEC entries
  • 11 positions allocated to auto-invite recipients
  • Only 15 remaining spots for additional entries

Other IMSA teams already confirmed to request Hypercar entries include:

  • Wayne Taylor Racing
  • Action Express
  • Proton Competition
  • Porsche Penske Motorsport (earned through IMSA GTP title)

The initial entry list for the 2025 Le Mans 24 Hours is expected to be released next week.
