The DVLA has released its latest list of banned '25' registration plates ahead of the March 1st plate change. These restrictions aim to prevent offensive, inappropriate, or sensitive content from appearing on UK roads.

Key points about the '25' plate ban:

  • The number '25' itself poses challenges due to its visual similarity to 'SS'
  • Banned combinations include 'TO25 ERR' and 'AS25 HOL'
  • Plates referencing alcohol or intoxication (like 'WA25 TED') are prohibited
  • War-related plates ('MG25 WAR', 'NF25 WAR') and references to Ukraine conflict ('25 RUS', '25 UKR') are blocked

The DVLA conducts these reviews twice annually, in March and September, screening for:

  • Criminal references
  • Racial slurs
  • Political messages
  • Religious content
  • Inappropriate language
  • Potentially embarrassing combinations

While many plates are banned, desirable combinations featuring popular names and initials will be available through DVLA auction from March 19-25, starting at £250.

"The plate-change always sparks interest in the new car market, as buyers often wait for new registrations," says Iain Reid, Head of Editorial at Carwow. "While personalized plates are popular, it's crucial they don't cause offense."

The DVLA uses an asterisk (*) in its registration system as a wildcard character, representing any possible character in that position.

Note: All banned plates are subject to DVLA review and new combinations may be added to the restricted list at any time.
