Formula 1's 2025 pre-season testing has begun with a notably different atmosphere, driven by teams' confident expectations rather than mere hopes for the upcoming season.

Teams are already looking ahead to 2026's significant regulatory changes, with Red Bull's Christian Horner describing it as "probably the biggest change Formula 1's had in 50 years," affecting both chassis and engine regulations simultaneously.

The 2025 season promises unprecedented competition, following a 2024 season that saw four teams securing multiple wins and one-two finishes. With regulations reaching maturity, teams expect even closer performance gaps across the grid.

McLaren team principal Zak Brown predicts an extremely tight field, suggesting at least four teams and eight drivers could win races this season. This confidence stems from the minimal gap between all ten teams at the end of last season in Abu Dhabi.

First day testing highlights:

  • Haas: 160 laps completed
  • Racing Bulls: 155 laps
  • Mercedes, Ferrari, Alpine, Red Bull, and Williams: 130+ laps each
  • Aston Martin: 88 laps (affected by power outage)
  • McLaren: Lower lap count but showed strong pace with Lando Norris topping times

While testing times shouldn't be over-interpreted, day one reinforced expectations of an incredibly competitive 2025 season. The reliability and evolutionary nature of most cars suggest teams are well-prepared for the challenges ahead.

The grid's collective confidence, backed by strong initial testing performance, indicates we might witness one of Formula 1's most closely contested seasons in recent history.
