Fast charging pioneer EVgo is rapidly expanding its network of DC fast charging stations across America, aiming to compete with Tesla's extensive Supercharger infrastructure.

Charging speeds explained:

Level 1 (120V AC) - Home outlet charging

  • Slowest option: 3-5 miles of range per hour
  • Best for overnight home charging
  • No special equipment needed

Level 2 (240V AC) - Home and public charging

  • Medium speed: 25 miles of range per hour
  • Common at stores, offices, public locations
  • Requires special charging equipment
  • Not ideal for quick charging needs

DC Fast Charging - Highway and urban centers

  • Fastest option: 150-200 miles in 30 minutes
  • Perfect for road trips and quick top-ups
  • Available at dedicated charging stations
  • Most expensive charging option

EVgo currently operates over 850 DC fast charging locations across the U.S. While this trails Tesla's 1,700+ Supercharger sites, EVgo's network is expanding aggressively through partnerships with retailers like Target, Whole Foods, and shopping centers.

The key advantage of EVgo's network is compatibility with all EV brands, compared to Tesla's proprietary system. However, Tesla recently announced plans to open select Supercharger locations to non-Tesla vehicles, which could impact EVgo's competitive position.

For most EV owners, home charging remains the primary solution. But as EV adoption grows, particularly in urban areas where home charging isn't always possible, networks like EVgo will play an increasingly critical role in supporting widespread electric vehicle use.
