Formula 1 drivers have enthusiastically welcomed General Motors' entry into F1 through the Cadillac brand, set to join the grid in 2026. The expansion will increase the field to 11 teams and 22 cars, with GM initially using a customer power unit before transitioning to its own works engine in 2028.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton emphasized the positive impact on job opportunities, while Fernando Alonso expressed confidence in the project's leadership, which includes experienced F1 personnel like Nick Chester, Pat Symonds, and Rob White.

Younger drivers, including Charles Leclerc and Pierre Gasly, are particularly excited about competing in a larger field, noting the increased opportunities for emerging talent. Leclerc highlighted that this would be the first time in his F1 career to race in a 22-car grid.

Several current and former drivers are already positioning themselves for potential race seats with the new team:

  • Valtteri Bottas confirmed having preliminary discussions with GM about 2026 opportunities
  • Kevin Magnussen, who previously raced for Cadillac in IMSA, expressed interest in leveraging his existing relationship with the manufacturer
  • Zhou Guanyu, currently without a 2025 seat, views the new team as a potential pathway back to F1

The addition of GM/Cadillac marks a significant expansion for Formula 1, representing the first time since 2016 that the grid will feature more than 20 cars. The move has received universal support from the paddock, with drivers highlighting the benefits for competition, employment, and the sport's overall growth.
