FIA Launches Tender Process for New-Generation LMP2 Powertrain and Electronics
The FIA has launched the first of two tender processes to define the next generation of LMP2 race cars beyond the current ruleset established in 2017.

The initial tender focuses on powertrain and electronics specifications, marking a significant change from the 2017 regulations by requiring a single specification for the entire powertrain system, rather than just the engine.
The current LMP2 regulations allow four chassis manufacturers (ORECA, Dallara, Ligier, and Multimatic) to choose their own gearbox suppliers, while Gibson Technologies provides the GK 428 naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8 engine.
After Gibson's initial contract extension through 2030 was canceled in June 2024, the current LMP2 formula will now continue in various series (ELMS, Asian Le Mans Series, IMSA, and Le Mans) until the end of 2027.
Key details of the new tender process:
- Submission deadline: April 30, 2025
- Decision announcement: June 10, 2025
- Implementation period: 2028-2032
- Powertrain and chassis suppliers must be different manufacturers
- Cost restrictions:
- Lease option: Maximum €1,500 (excluding VAT) per running hour for engine and control unit
- Outright purchase option also available
- Transmission cost cap: €550 (excluding VAT) per running hour (including parts, rebuilds, and support)
A separate chassis tender will follow, though it's unclear whether this will be awarded to a single manufacturer or multiple suppliers.
