The FIA is evaluating the reintroduction of driver weight ballast regulations for the World Endurance Championship (WEC) this season, potentially affecting both Hypercar and LMGT3 classes.

The proposed system would require all driver line-ups to meet an average weight of 82kg, including equipment. Teams would need to add or remove ballast to meet this target, similar to rules previously used in the LMP1 Hybrid era.

Key aspects of the potential regulation:

  • Mandatory driver weigh-ins at the Qatar Prologue test
  • Average driver weight target of 82kg per line-up
  • Ballast adjustments to equalize all teams
  • Expected impact of 0.15 seconds per 10kg in LMGT3
  • Approximately double the time impact in Hypercar class

While teams are preparing for implementation, several questions remain unanswered:

  • Frequency of weight checks throughout the season
  • Penalties for non-compliance
  • Implementation of random spot checks
  • Official confirmation and final regulations

The move comes partly in response to concerns about lighter drivers offsetting Balance of Performance (BoP) ballast, including comments from F1 champion Max Verstappen about Le Mans participation. Teams expect the regulation to significantly impact competitiveness and create more equitable racing conditions.

The change could particularly benefit teams currently at a weight disadvantage, with performance implications varying by class and circuit. Final confirmation and detailed regulations are expected soon, as mandatory weigh-ins begin at the Prologue test.
