A full tank for a family-sized petrol car now costs £76.81, nearly £3 more than October's £73.88. Diesel fill-ups increased to £80.56, up £4 from October's £76.45.

The price surge stems from oil reaching $82 per barrel in mid-January, driven by increased cold weather demand and US leadership transition concerns. However, recent oil price drops suggest fuel costs should decrease soon.

Where to find cheaper fuel:

  • Supermarkets offer unleaded at 2.3p less per litre and diesel at 2.6p less
  • Some locations in Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-upon-Tyne sell unleaded for 127.7p per litre
  • Independent stations in Shropshire offer petrol at 126.9p and diesel at 135.9p per litre
  • Northern Ireland has the UK's lowest average prices: 132.9p for unleaded and 138.9p for diesel

For best value:

  • Compare supermarket prices, which can vary by up to 13p per litre
  • Check independent stations, which sometimes offer better deals
  • Use local fuel price comparison tools to find the lowest prices in your area
  • Consider traveling to nearby areas with consistently lower prices

With wholesale prices declining, consumers should expect relief at the pumps soon. Meanwhile, shopping around remains the best strategy for immediate savings.
