Legacy Motor Club Eyes Motorsports Expansion Beyond NASCAR Under Johnson's Leadership
Legacy Motor Club has entered a new phase as seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson becomes majority owner, with Knighthead Capital Management, LLC joining as a minority investor. The partnership signals ambitious plans for expansion beyond NASCAR competition.
While NASCAR remains the organization's primary focus, Johnson envisions broader opportunities within motorsports and automotive experiences. "Our focus is NASCAR. That is the crown jewel, our nucleus, of everything we want to be. But I do feel there are other opportunities for expansion within motorsports, throughout NASCAR, in other divisions," Johnson stated.

Legacy Motor Club currently fields two full-time Toyota entries for Erik Jones and John Hunter Nemechek in the Cup Series. The team's new partnership with Knighthead Capital, whose portfolio includes HERTZ, JOTA Racing, and various automotive ventures, opens doors for strategic growth.
Johnson emphasized building the Legacy brand through racing success while exploring additional automotive spaces:
- Historic racing events
- Experiential driving opportunities
- Track-based enthusiast programs
- Automotive lifestyle experiences
"There are many layers to the car space, and that's what I want Legacy Motor Club to evolve into over time," Johnson explained, highlighting his vision for creating a comprehensive automotive brand that extends beyond traditional racing competition.
The announcement was made during the team's season kickoff event, attended by Knighthead Capital executives including co-founder Tom Wagner, marking the beginning of this expanded vision for Legacy Motor Club.
