Melissa (Mimi) Lazzaro Keeps Her Father's Legacy Alive at Fonda's Track of Champions
For Melissa (Mimi) Lazzaro, Fonda Speedway represents more than just a racing venue—it's a sanctuary of memories where her father, the legendary Lou Lazzaro, crafted his remarkable legacy. At this hallowed "Track of Champions," Lou accumulated 113 victories and left an indelible mark on motorsport history.
Lou's journey at Fonda began triumphantly in 1961 with his first victory. He went on to secure four track championships (1964, 1969, 1977, and 1978), dominating the competition for nearly three decades. Even as victories became less frequent in his later years, his passion never diminished.

Growing up in a racing household, Mimi recalls weekly Saturday pilgrimages to Fonda, where she helped her father maintain his race car. "Rolling into Fonda Speedway was one of my favorite things to do with dad. It felt like home to us," she remembers. Despite facing health challenges, including Crohn's disease, and financial struggles, Lou persevered with support from key figures like Junior Bianco, Danny Morrone, and Mike McKeon.

Lou's final race came on April 29, 2000, at his beloved Fonda Speedway. Hours after experiencing symptoms in his pit stall, he passed away in the hospital, marking the end of an era. His racing career had come full circle—his first Fonda victory was on May 20, 1961, and his last on May 15, 1999, nearly 38 years apart.

Today, Melissa "Mimi" Lazzaro continues her father's legacy at Fonda Speedway, performing the national anthem, conducting driver interviews, and working with the Fonda Historical Society and Hall of Fame. "Fonda means home to me," she says. "It's where I feel closest to my dad because we spent so many weekends there. I may not have been there for his first race, but I was there for his last, and I will hold on to that until the day I die."
