Max Verstappen's potential move to Mercedes appears unlikely, according to former Mercedes strategy director and current Williams team principal James Vowles.

Despite performance clauses that could allow Verstappen to leave Red Bull, Vowles believes Mercedes' current driver lineup offers a stronger cultural fit. He cites George Russell's consistent performance and Kimi's rapid development as key factors in Mercedes' future plans.

While acknowledging Verstappen's exceptional talent, particularly highlighting his impressive performance in Japan, Vowles suggests the potential downsides of signing the Dutch champion might outweigh the benefits. "He comes with a lot of downsides that you have to acknowledge," Vowles stated.

The speculation around Verstappen's future intensified after his manager Raymond Vermeulen was seen speaking with Alpine team principal Ollie Oakes in Saudi Arabia. However, Verstappen himself has dismissed these rumors, noting that "a lot of people are talking about it, except me."

Mercedes has yet to confirm either of its current drivers for 2026, but Vowles believes their existing lineup provides the right balance of performance and team chemistry for future success.
