NASCAR Introduces Optional Softer Tire Compound for Phoenix Spring Race
NASCAR will introduce an option tire for the March 9 Phoenix Raceway race, expanding its tire strategy program for the 2025 Cup Series season.

Teams will receive one set of option tires for practice, with qualifying required on primary tires. For the 312-lap race, each team's allocation includes two sets of option tires and six sets of primary tires.
Following the Richmond Raceway model, teams have complete freedom in deciding when to use the option tires during the race, with no mandatory usage requirements.
The option tire, which features a softer compound for increased grip but faster wear, made its debut at the 2024 All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro Speedway, followed by its first points-race appearance at Richmond in August.
If the Phoenix spring race proves successful, NASCAR plans to make the option tire the primary choice for the November championship finale, though no option tire will be available during championship weekend.
