NASCAR Retains Current Playoff Format for 2025 Season Despite Fan Criticism
NASCAR has opted not to modify its playoff format for the 2025 season, despite recent criticism over championship outcomes. The decision was announced during NASCAR's annual preseason rules briefing with the media on Monday.

The current format has faced scrutiny after Joey Logano won the 2024 Cup Series championship despite finishing 15th in regular season standings. Similarly, Ryan Blaney claimed the 2023 title after ranking 13th in regular season points. Both drivers secured their championships with strong playoff performances despite modest regular season results.
John Probst, NASCAR's executive vice president, acknowledged receiving significant fan feedback, which generally fell into three categories:
- Those satisfied with the current playoff format
- Those opposed to the playoff system entirely
- Those seeking changes but uncertain about specific solutions
The decision to maintain the status quo for 2025 was influenced by several factors:
- The timing of the season's end and banquet
- The introduction of three new TV partners
- The need for stakeholder consultation on major changes
Looking ahead, NASCAR will establish a working group including media, manufacturers, Goodyear, drivers, and other stakeholders to evaluate potential changes for the 2026 season. While the format remains unchanged for 2025, NASCAR leadership emphasizes they are actively listening to fan feedback and considering future modifications.
