Robert Kubica, Ferrari Lead Opening Session of WEC Qatar Prologue
Robert Kubica led the opening session of the FIA World Endurance Championship Prologue test at Qatar's Losail International Circuit, setting a 1m41.673s lap in the No. 83 AF Corse Ferrari 499P. Will Stevens followed in second place with the No. 12 Cadillac Hertz Team Jota V-Series R, both drivers being the only ones to break the 1m42s barrier.
The Hypercar class showed impressive competitiveness, with just over one second covering the top six cars, including three Ferraris, two Cadillacs, and Dries Vanthoor's No. 15 BMW. Times were notably slower than 2024's pole position, running approximately two seconds off pace due to new gravel traps installed at nine locations to prevent track limits violations.
Aston Martin's THOR Team made an encouraging debut with their Valkyries, completing over 100 laps between both cars. The No. 007 finished around two seconds off the fastest time, while the No. 009 was a further second behind.
The session saw several red flags, with incidents involving:
- Francois Heriau in the No. 55 Vista AF Corse 296 GT3
- Claudio Schiavoni in the No. 60 Iron Lynx AMG GT3
- The No. 6 Penske Porsche stopping at Turn 6
- A significant fire for the No. 77 Ford Mustang, driven by Ben Tuck
In LM GT3, Ben Barnicoat topped the class with a 1m55.862s in the No. 78 Akkodis ASP Lexus, followed by Dani Juncadella's TF Sport Corvette and Davide Rigon's Vista AF Corse Ferrari rounding out the top three.
