Red Bull team principal Christian Horner emphasized Lawson's proven capabilities during his stints with Visa Cash App Racing Bulls, highlighting his racing prowess and ability to compete at the highest level. The move continues Red Bull's tradition of promoting talent from within their Junior Program, following successful predecessors like Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen.
"To be announced as an Oracle Red Bull Racing Driver is a lifelong dream for me," said Lawson, who will partner with four-time champion Max Verstappen. He credits his recent six-race stint replacing Daniel Ricciardo as crucial preparation for this opportunity.
The promotion of Lawson to Red Bull's main team is expected to create an opening at RB for Formula 2 runner-up Isack Hadjar, who would join Yuki Tsunoda. Despite Tsunoda's experience of 87 grands prix over four seasons, Red Bull opted for Lawson as Perez's replacement.
The decision comes after negotiations led to the early termination of Perez's contract, marking a significant shift in Red Bull's driver lineup for the upcoming season.
