Mercedes solves critical torque sensor issues ahead of Rolex 24
Mercedes-AMG has resolved initial torque sensor issues affecting its GT3 EVOs ahead of the Rolex 24, following intensive testing and software updates.

The main challenge involved communication between Mercedes-AMG's ECU and the IMSA-supplied ECU controlling power output through sensors. Despite missing IMSA's Daytona test in November, the team conducted private testing at DIS in December and completed extensive dyno testing at Portimao and Paul Ricard.
Initial complications during the Roar Before the 24 led to lost track time, with cars sometimes running unrestricted. Stefan Wendl, Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing boss, explained that the complex integration between the car's software, IMSA logging system, and official timing created unforeseen challenges that couldn't be fully tested outside an official IMSA event.
The team's developers in Germany worked overnight to implement a firmware update, successfully resolving the issues by Saturday morning. The solution didn't require programming changes but rather proper data routing between systems.
While the system is now functioning correctly, Wendl remains cautious about the team's prospects for the Rolex 24. "We are a little bit on the back foot — I do not see us as the favorite based on the lack of experience with the new system," he stated. However, the team continues to gather data and share experiences across all teams to optimize performance.
The five AMG GT3 EVOs are now operational with the new system, though the team acknowledges they're still in a learning phase as they prepare to defend their GTD crown at the Rolex 24.
