Red Bull team principal Christian Horner claims Sergio Perez voluntarily chose to step away from Formula 1, contradicting Perez's previous statements about wanting to continue racing.

Perez had consistently maintained his commitment to Red Bull through a two-year contract until the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. However, following the announcement of his immediate departure from the team, Horner presents a different narrative.

According to Horner, Perez's decision came after a challenging season. While the Mexican driver started strong with four podiums in five races, his performance declined significantly after the Monaco Grand Prix. Despite team support, Horner suggests Perez concluded it was time to step away from F1.

"I think foremost and utmost, he needs to take some time out and see how much he misses driving a grand prix car, and then only he can decide what he wants for the future," Horner stated. Sources close to Perez dispute this version of events.

Regarding Perez's replacement, Red Bull is considering two candidates: Yuki Tsunoda and Liam Lawson. Both drivers have undergone testing with the team, with Lawson reportedly being the frontrunner. Horner indicated that a final decision would be announced in the coming days after consulting with the engineering team.

With no race seats available outside the Red Bull organization for 2025, Horner suggests Perez might explore other racing categories, such as sports cars, or potentially end his Formula 1 career altogether.
