The transformation of Road America into an endurance event has been in development for nearly two years. The Wisconsin venue will join the Michelin Endurance Cup, creating a balanced calendar structure with major events at Rolex, Sebring, Watkins Glen, and Road America, before teams compete at Petit Le Mans.

Indianapolis will transition back to a two-hour, 40-minute sprint race, reflecting IMSA's commitment to managing competitor budgets. Doonan emphasized that adding endurance events requires careful consideration of costs, including engine hours, components, tires, and fuel.

Road America's August 2 event is expected to see increased attendance, particularly from camping fans taking advantage of mild Midwest summer weather. The track's natural terrain and family-friendly atmosphere align with IMSA's successful strategy of offering accessible trackside viewing.

Key calendar adjustments for 2026 include:

  • Watkins Glen moving to the final weekend in June
  • Sebring maintaining its traditional third Saturday in March date
  • Indianapolis Motor Speedway confirmed as a long-term venue
  • Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course continuing to host a four-hour Michelin Pilot Challenge race

IMSA is also considering additional venues for stand-alone events, including potential return to historic tracks like Lime Rock Park. These decisions reflect IMSA's broader strategy to balance tradition, innovation, and practical considerations while maintaining the sport's health and growth.
