Our reliance on fossil fuels significantly impacts public health. According to the 2024 State of the Air report, 131.2 million Americans (39%) live in areas with unhealthy air pollution levels, leading to serious health conditions including respiratory issues, cognitive impairment, heart problems, and premature death.

Vehicle emissions are the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. The EPA reports that passenger cars, medium- and heavy-duty trucks, and light-duty trucks account for over half of transportation sector emissions through the combustion of gasoline and diesel fuel.

Low-income neighborhoods and communities of color face disproportionate impacts, being 2.3 times more likely to live in areas with failing air quality grades. These communities are often located near pollution sources like highways, ports, and railways.

A 2023 American Lung Association report projects that transitioning to 100% zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) and clean electricity generation by 2050 could result in:

  • $978 billion in public health benefits
  • 89,300 fewer premature deaths
  • 2.2 million fewer asthma attacks
  • 10.7 million fewer lost workdays

A UC Berkeley study demonstrated that increased EV adoption directly correlates with decreased emissions in the Bay Area, showing the potential impact of widespread ZEV adoption.

You can help reduce air pollution by:

  • Switching to a ZEV
  • Walking, biking, or using public transit
  • Planning efficient trips
  • Using eco-mode while driving
  • Choosing green rideshare options
  • Supporting pollution-reducing policies
  • Using renewable energy-powered charging networks

These actions contribute to cleaner air and better health outcomes for all communities.
