Key Features of the GT1 Challenge:
- Maximum of nine races per season
- Championship points based on best five races
- Eligible vehicles include tube-frame cars with silhouette bodies from 1982 or later
- Compatible with SCCA Club GT1 class specifications
- Current TA class cars can compete if prepared to GT1 rules
The new class allows teams to utilize older equipment no longer eligible for TA National Championship, with minimal modifications needed from their SCCA Club GT1 setups. Rookie drivers maintain their TA class rookie status throughout their first season, enabling future participation in TA class National or Western Championships.
Technical Director Aaron Coalwell explains that the GT1 Challenge addresses the performance gap between current TA cars and older GT1 vehicles by adopting SCCA GT1 class rules and weights. This ensures GT1 cars can compete without disadvantage while providing teams an opportunity to race in a professional series.
Trans Am President Andy Lally emphasizes this initiative's value in combining GT1 and Trans Am racing, creating an exciting showcase of V8-powered competition. The 2025 season begins at Sebring International Raceway, February 20-23.
