Williams Boss Confirms Colapinto Will Return After Alpine Loan Spell
Franco Colapinto's temporary move to Alpine is part of a strategic plan that will see him return to Williams in the future, according to Williams team principal James Vowles.
Colapinto, who scored five points in nine races for Williams in 2024, joined Alpine as a reserve driver on a multi-year deal after losing his Williams race seat to Carlos Sainz for 2025.

Vowles explained that the loan arrangement with Alpine was designed to keep Colapinto racing in 2025 and potentially 2026, viewing it as the best opportunity for the Argentine driver's development. While the exact timeline for his return remains flexible, Vowles emphasized his intention to bring Colapinto back to Williams.
"Franco is my driver that I want back in that car. After a period of time, he'll return to Williams," Vowles stated, while acknowledging that he hopes to see Colapinto racing in place of Jack Doohan at Alpine this season to gain more experience.
Currently, Williams' driver lineup is set through 2026, with both Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon contracted for the next two seasons, coinciding with Formula 1's new era of regulations.
